If you’re looking for something different than what all the shrimp trucks on Oahu has to offer and you love Thai food, give Thai Food Express and Thai Food Express One a try. Both these trucks are owned and operated by brothers and both make really good Thai food at affordable prices.
Thai Food Express and Thai Food Express One are located on the Windward side of Oahu. Thai Food Express One is located near Mike’s Huli Huli Chicken in Kaneohe and is operated by Tommy. Thai Food Express is located just a little further north, in Punalu’u (next to Kaya’s store) and is operated by Tommy’s brother, Norm.
Though they have roughly the same menus, they are still distinguishable from the other as far as taste goes. I had a chance to meet and talk with both Tommy and Norm during my visit to both their locations. They are great guys who love food and could not have been more friendly during my visit.
Both trucks offer protein choices of Chicken, Beef, Pork, Tofu, Shrimp and Salmon and of course Veggie for non-meat eaters. The most popular dishes are the Panang, Yellow and Green Curry. Their prices are very reasonable, ranging from $10 up to $12 for their main dishes. The Spring Rolls and Papaya Salad costs $7 each. For what you get at the price you pay, very few food trucks on the island can do the same. Beverage items you might want to try while you’re there are the Thai Iced Tea and the Thai Iced Coffee. I tried them both at only $3 each and found them quite refreshing.
While at Tommy’s truck, Thai Food Express One, I tried the Shrimp Yellow Curry. This dish comes with basil leaf, onions, carrots and potatoes. What is unique about the potatoes is that they are steamed and not boiled. This helps maintain more of the nutrients as they are being cooked.
The curry was very nice and had a rich flavor to it. I really liked the fact that they serve quality sticky rice since it goes so well with this type of dish. The ingredients were fresh and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. All in all, it was a very tasty and filling dish.
Overall, I really enjoyed the food at the Thai Food Express One food truck. The seasoning was spot on, the ingredients were fresh and well prepared and the prices are more than reasonable. If you are in the area and looking for a great place to eat at a pretty low price, either Thai Food Express trucks should be able to hit the spot and provide something a little different than what many other food trucks offer.
