Fumis Shrimp Truck has two locations very close to one another. If you are driving from West to East, you will see the actual shrimp truck, which has a beautifully painted sunset off the water with a white and red sign. If you continue to drive past it, going East, you will come across the second Fumis Shrimp Truck, which is set up in a regular brick and mortar building, painted blue and yellow. I believe the building is called “Fumi’s Shrimp Farm”, according to Fumi’s Facebook page. I ate at Fumi’s Shrimp Farm (blue and yellow building). I would imagine both locations would have the same menu and taste; however, I could not verify that since I did not eat at the other location.
Fumis Shrimp Truck has 13 different plates to choose from. Their proteins they serve are: Shrimp, Deep Fried Cod, Pork Chop, Chicken Katsu and Garlic Catfish. Of the three shrimp trucks near the Kahuku area, Fumis Shrimp Truck has the widest selection of Shrimp dishes. Giovanni’s and Romy’s are the other two shrimp trucks in the area.
When I asked which was their most popular Shrimp plates, they said the Butter Garlic Shrimp and the Spicy Garlic Shrimp. Since almost every shrimp truck on the island has a version of a Butter Garlic Shrimp, I gave their Spicy Garlic Shrimp a try. They were not that busy at the time I stopped by so my wait was not very long at all.
The Spicy Garlic Shrimp plate comes with two scoops of rice, a small salad (with dressing) and a fresh slice of pineapple. If anyone has been to Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, they have a “Hot & Spicy” Shrimp plate which they specifically write next to it, “Very Hot. NO REFUNDS”. I have never tried it but thankfully, Fumi’s Spicy Garlic Shrimp was not overbearingly spicy. I thought it was very nicely done. It has a little kick to it but nothing most people couldn’t handle. They also drizzle a nice amount of sauce on the rice, which to me was a nice touch, especially if you’re not too keen on just eating plain white rice.
Overall, I really liked Fumis Shrimp Truck. I felt their sides and overall presentation was very well done. The salad was a nice touch to help break up the spicy garlic flavors and of course, a fresh slice of pineapple never hurt anyone either. They also have a good selection of food to choose from. This does not mean I thought the shrimp portion alone was the best, but the overall presentation and sides were the best. I will get into “who has the best shrimp truck on the North Shore” in a combined review of all the major Oahu shrimp trucks in the near future.
Of the big three shrimp trucks near Kahuku, Fumis Shrimp Truck has the longest hours of operation, from 10:00am to 7:30pm, seven days a week. Giovanni’s Original Shrimp Truck is open from 10:30am to 6:30pm, seven days a week. Romy’s hours are from 10:00am to 6:00pm, seven days a week.
If you like to use Yelp as a barometer for recommendations on places to eat, 80% of Yelpers gave Fumis Shrimp Truck a 4 to 5 star rating. On the flip side, only 6% of Yelpers didn’t like their food and gave Fumi’s 1 or 2 stars. At the time of this article, Fumi’s had only a combined total of 340 Yelp reviews as opposed to 569 for Romy’s. Giovanni’s has by far the most ratings, 1624, which is just for their original location in Kahuku. Their second location in Haleiwa has 613 ratings. Though more have given their review for Giovanni’s, you should take any review with a grain of salt, even this one. At the same time, when you have a community like Yelp, it is hard to not take the views of hundreds of customers seriously.
Here are some photos of my visit to Fumis Shrimp Truck
The official name of Fumis Shrimp Truck, is “Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp” and since most people just call every place like this a shrimp truck, they have two different Yelp pages. The one with the most traffic and feedback is the first Yelp link below:
If you want to see the most unique food website design in history, check out Fumi’s site here, as linked by their own Facebook Page. Their website features a guitar on it with only the word “Menu” in English and not a single image of food is shown. So if you want some more info on Fumis Shrimp Truck, make sure to visit the Yelp pages above.
