Located at the southern end of the Historic Haleiwa restaurant row, the Big Wave Shrimp Truck is a great place to grab a bite to eat. They offer six different shrimp plates to choose from, which include Garlic Shrimp, Spicy Shrimp, Lemon Pepper Shrimp, Crunchy Coconut Shrimp, Peeled Garlic Shrimp and Shrimp Fried Rice. Their shrimp plates range from $13 to $14. The Big Wave Shrimp Truck also offers steak ($12), rib ($12), calamari ($10) and spring roll ($6) plates.
Since everything looked good, I had to ask which was their most popular. Mike replied the Garlic Shrimp and the Crunchy Coconut Shrimp so I had to try them both. The Big Wave Shrimp Truck has been open for over eight years and has even been featured in the TV show Diners, Dives and Drive Ins on the Food Network as shown in the clip below.
The Crunchy Coconut Shrimp. This was amazingly light and not oily at all. The color was perfect. The taste was spot on, one of the better fried shrimp dishes I have had in a long time. The plate comes with nine butterflied shrimp that are evenly coated with panko, flour and fresh coconut flakes. What really makes the Crunchy Coconut Shrimp dish complete is the sweet Thai chili dipping sauce that comes with it. Another nice touch is the accompanied shredded side salad with Thousand Island dressing. You definitely can’t go wrong ordering this.
The Garlic Shrimp. Of all the places I’ve been to so far, Big Wave Shrimp has to have the freshest and most well prepped garlic of any garlic shrimp plate I have had. As you can see from my photo gallery below, the garlic is very distinct and served generously on each plate.
Garlic can be a tricky ingredient to work with because it has such a powerful kick to it. What Big Wave Shrimp has done very nicely is provide a lot of garlic and garlic flavor without it being overpowering to the pallet. The Garlic Shrimp at Big Wave Shrimp is another definite must.
Overall, the food I tried at Big Wave Shrimp was very good. And what’s better than great food? It’s served with “Aloha”, which Mike and Kate gladly do. I had a chance to speak with them while waiting for my order. You can tell right away, they love what they do and they care to see that their customers have everything they need. No one cares more for a business than the owners of that business and to bring out your food with a genuine smile always makes for a better dining experience. So if you are looking for a place to grab a bite to eat in Haleiwa, Big Wave Shrimp is a great place to visit.
They are open from 9:00AM to 7:00PM, seven days a week. They provide two very clean and nice dining areas. One in front of their truck, next to Kamehameha Highway and the other is a covered spot behind the truck with about ten park benches for additional seating. I will definitely be visiting Big Wave Shrimp when I’m in the Haleiwa area again.
